Lotofaga Archaeological Site (Samoa)

Weather…

Lotofaga, located on the southern coast of Upolu, is one of Samoa's most significant archaeological zones, known for its extensive settlement structures and monumental earth mounds. The site features numerous 'Tia Seu Lupe' (star mounds), which were once used for the ceremonial catching of pigeons, a high-prestige activity for the Samoan elite. Scientific investigations have shown that Lotofaga was densely populated as early as the first half of the first millennium CE, with inhabitants employing advanced agricultural techniques on fertile volcanic soils. Beside the star mounds, remains of stone platforms for dwellings (fale) are found here, providing insights into the social hierarchy of the ancient community. The coastal region is also geologically unique due to collapsed lava tubes, such as the famous To-Sua Ocean Trench, which was significant for prehistoric water supply and as a religious site. Lotofaga plays a central role in the oral history of the Tuila'epa lineage and remains a living example of the continuity of Samoan traditions over nearly two millennia.
