Fagamalo Tai is a coastal village steeped in history, located in the Gaga'emauga district on the northeastern coast of Savai'i. During the German colonial period (1900-1914), Fagamalo served as the administrative capital of Savai'i island and the residence of the German District Officer. This historical significance is still visible today in the remnants of colonial-era buildings and the village layout. The village is situated on an easy on the eye bay protected by a reef and was for a long time a vital port for steamships. Near Fagamalo are the impressive Saleaula lava fields, created by the eruption of Mount Matavanu in the early 20th century. Today, the local economy is driven by a combination of tourism, fishing, and agriculture. Fagamalo is renowned for its hospitality and serves as a gateway for exploring the geological wonders of Savai'i. The village community preserves its traditions through regular cultural festivals and the maintenance of the Matai system, which guides social order.
