Maria Islands Nature Reserve (St. Lucia)

Weather…

The Maria Islands Nature Reserve comprises two small islets, Maria Major and Maria Minor, located about one kilometer off the southeast coast of Saint Lucia near Vieux Fort. Established as a protected area in 1982, the reserve is a critical sanctuary for endemic species that have been driven to extinction on the mainland. Its most famous inhabitant is the Saint Lucia Racer, currently ranked as the world's rarest snake, finding its last refuge on these rocky shores. The islands are also home to the bustling Saint Lucia Whiptail lizard, known for the striking blue and yellow colors of the males. Due to the extreme fragility of the ecosystem, public access is strictly regulated and generally limited to the dry season, between February and August. Visitors must be accompanied by certified guides to ensure the protection of ground-nesting seabirds and the unique reptile populations. This reserve represents one of the most successful conservation efforts in the Caribbean, preserving a prehistoric link to the island's natural heritage.
