Dennery Island Nature Reserve (St. Lucia)

Weather…

Dennery Island is a rugged, uninhabited islet located just off the eastern coast of Saint Lucia, near the traditional fishing village of Dennery. Designated as a nature reserve, the island serves as a critical sanctuary for several endemic and threatened species. Most notably, it is one of the primary habitats for the Saint Lucia Anole (Anolis luciae), a colorful lizard found nowhere else in the world. The terrain is characterized by steep, wind-swept cliffs and dry scrubland where various species of hardy cacti thrive. These inaccessible cliffs provide safe nesting grounds for numerous coastal birds, such as boobies and frigatebirds, protecting them from land-based predators. The surrounding waters are also part of the attraction, as the island's elevated vantage points offer excellent opportunities for spotting humpback whales and dolphins during their seasonal migrations. While access to the island is restricted to preserve its fragile ecosystem, it remains a vital symbol of Saint Lucia's environmental conservation efforts and its commitment to protecting unique Caribbean biodiversity.
