Slatina is the capital of Olt County, positioned on the left bank of the Olt River at the transition point between the Getic Plateau and the Romanian Plain. The city was first documented in 1368 in a trade privilege granted by Prince Vladislav I Vlaicu, marking over 650 years of history. In the 20th century, Slatina emerged as one of Romania's leading industrial hubs, notably housing Alro Slatina, the largest aluminum producer in Central and Eastern Europe. Beyond its industrial prominence, the city is celebrated as the birthplace of the world-renowned playwright Eugen Ionescu, a pioneer of the Theater of the Absurd. Its historical center features pleasant late 19th-century architecture that reflects its past as a prosperous trading town. Slatina also maintains lively cultural traditions, highlighted by the annual "Oltenii și Restu' Lumii" festival, which celebrates the unique humor and folk heritage of the Oltenia region.
