Stephen's Tower Piatra Neamț (Romania)

Weather…

Stephen's Tower (Turnul lui Ștefan cel Mare) in Piatra Neamț is a prominent landmark of medieval Moldavian architecture, commissioned by Prince Stephen the Great in 1499. Built as a bell tower for the adjacent St. John the Baptist Church, it was also designed with a strategic military function as a watchtower overlooking the Bistrița Valley. Standing at 19 meters tall, the tower is constructed from local stone and brick, featuring distinctive decorative elements like glazed ceramic discs and traditional niches. Its structure transitions from a square base to an octagonal belfry, a design hallmark of the era's regional style. Over the centuries, the tower survived numerous fires and sieges, undergoing various restorations to maintain its historical integrity. It is currently the centerpiece of the Princely Court (Curtea Domnească) ensemble and the most recognizable symbol of Piatra Neamț. Visitors can explore the site and admire the craftsmanship that has preserved this 15th-century monument almost in its original state.
