Amara is a well-known spa town located in Ialomița County, in the heart of the Bărăgan Plain, southeastern Romania. The town is famous for Lake Amara, a natural lake formed in an abandoned meander of the Ialomița River, whose waters are highly concentrated in sulfates, magnesium, and chloride. Since the late 19th century, the sapropelic mud from the lake has been used for balneological treatments, particularly for rheumatic, neurological, and skin conditions. The resort is characterized by extensive parklands and sandy beaches along the lake, offering a cool refuge from the intense heat of the surrounding plains. Amara attained town status as part of its development into a modern health tourism hub, featuring various sanatoriums and hotels. Economically, while tourism is the primary driver, the town also supports significant grain farming activities typical of the region. Culturally, Amara is the host of the 'Amara Trophy' pop music festival, one of Romania's longest-running talent competitions. Its proximity to the city of Slobozia and its unique environmental features make it a significant landmark in the vast Romanian steppe.
