Arad is a historic city in western Romania, located on the banks of the Mureș River, very close to the Hungarian border. It is renowned for its impressive architecture, much of it dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries when the city was a major center within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The city's boulevards are lined with elegant palaces in Secession and Neoclassical styles, including the Administrative Palace (City Hall) and the Cultural Palace. Arad is also home to a massive star-shaped fortress built in the Vauban style during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa. Historically, Arad is deeply significant to both Romanians and Hungarians; it was the site of the execution of the 13 Martyrs of Arad in 1849 and later served as a political center for the preparations of the 1918 Union of Transylvania with Romania. Today, Arad is a prosperous industrial and logistics hub, benefiting from its strategic location at the gateway to Central Europe while offering a rich array of museums, theaters, and green riverside spaces.
