Al Zubarah is Qatar's most important archaeological site and the country's first UNESCO World Heritage site. The abandoned coastal town on the northwest coast was a thriving center for pearl fishing and trade in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At the height of its success, it attracted merchants from all over the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, and Arabia. The remains of the city, buried under the sand, include palaces, mosques, residential houses, fishermen's huts, and markets. The most impressive surviving structure is the Zubarah Fort, built in 1938 to protect the coast long after the original city was abandoned. The archaeological excavations at Al Zubarah offer a unique insight into the urban life, society, and economy of the Gulf region before the oil boom. The site is a testament to the wealth once generated by the pearl trade.
