Al Thaqab Fort (Qatar)

Weather…

Al Thaqab Fort is a desert fort in the northern part of Qatar. Its name means 'the hole' or 'the place where water seeps', indicating the vital water source it once protected. The fort was likely built in the 19th century to safeguard the local population and their water supply from raids. It has a rectangular layout with an open central courtyard surrounded by high walls. There are circular towers at three of the corners, while the fourth corner is occupied by a rectangular room. The fort was constructed from local limestone blocks and is a typical example of Qatar's defensive rural architecture. It served as a safe haven for Bedouin families and their animals. After restoration, it now stands as a silent monument in the desert landscape, a reminder of the times when water was the most precious resource.
