Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC) is not a typical city but a massive, state-of-the-art industrial zone on the northeast coast of Qatar. It was specifically built to exploit the North Field, the world's largest natural gas field. Ras Laffan is the centerpiece of Qatar's LNG (liquefied natural gas) industry, making Qatar one of the world's largest exporters. The area is strictly controlled and houses massive LNG plants, gas-to-liquids plants, and petrochemical complexes. The Port of Ras Laffan is the largest artificial harbor in the world, built specifically to handle the giant LNG tankers. Although an industrial zone, there are also residential areas for the thousands of workers and engineers from around the world. The city is a symbol of Qatar's economic power and its strategic importance in the global energy market.
