Malapascua
Malapascua is a tiny, serene island off the northern coast of Cebu, globally famous among divers. It is the only spot on Earth where Thresher Sharks are reliably seen almost every day at Monad Shoal, an underwater cleaning station they visit at dawn. The island itself features a blissful escape from modern life, as there are no cars and very few paved roads. Bounty Beach, the island's main shoreline, is a pretty stretch of white sand lined with cozy dive resorts and seaside restaurants, maintaining a friendly, community feel. For those who don't dive, Malapascua gives a chance to experience authentic island living. A stroll across the island leads to North Beach (Langob Beach), a secluded paradise with turquoise waters and often no crowds. The local community is welcoming, and the culinary scene surprisingly diverse, featuring everything from high-quality Italian pasta to affordable local grilled seafood at village stalls. The island's vibe is distinctly slow-paced, encouraging visitors to unwind and enjoy the simple beauty of the Visayan Sea. It's a place where time seems to stand still. Reaching Malapascua requires a 4-hour drive from Cebu City to Maya Port, followed by a 45-minute boat ride. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from December to May, when the seas are calmest and visibility is at its peak. While the Thresher Sharks are present year-round, these months provide the most reliable weather for the boat crossing and early morning dives. It is highly recommended for travelers seeking a world-class diving experience combined with a quiet, barefoot island atmosphere.
