Calicoan Island
Calicoan Island, situated at the southeastern tip of Samar, is the ultimate destination for wave riders in the Philippines. Facing the vast Pacific Ocean, the island features world-class surfing conditions, particularly at the renowned ABCD Beach. Unlike more famous spots like Siargao, Calicoan has maintained a tranquil, almost mystical atmosphere. The landscape is characterized by rugged cliff formations, deep blue waters, and dense coconut groves. Beyond the surf, the island features fascinating natural saltwater lagoons and hidden coves first-rate for exploration. Its pristine nature appeals to adventurers seeking solitude and raw beauty. The area also holds historical significance, being close to Guiuan, where Ferdinand Magellan first made landfall in the Philippines in 1521. This blend of extreme sports and history makes it a unique getaway. Local dining highlights the best of the ocean, with fresh lobster, mud crabs, and yellowfin tuna frequently served. Reaching the island involves a four-to-five-hour drive from Tacloban. The best surfing season is during the monsoon from October to March when the Pacific swells are at their peak. For casual swimmers and beach lovers, the calmer months from April to August are good.
