Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve (Peru)

Weather…

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, often called the 'Jungle of Mirrors,' is the largest protected flooded forest in the Amazon and a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Located in the Loreto region, it is a vast wetland where the black waters of the Pacaya and Samiria rivers create great reflections of the towering forest and sky. During the rainy season, up to 85% of the reserve is flooded, creating a unique aquatic wilderness accessible only by boat. The reserve is a vital sanctuary for the pink Amazon dolphin, the giant river otter, and the massive paiche fish. It is a world-class model for community-led conservation, where local people manage the forest's resources sustainably. Pacaya Samiria is a place where nature's abundance and spiritual serenity meet.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The reserve is primarily accessed via organized boat transport departing from the port towns of Iquitos or Nauta, with the actual waterway journey taking several hours of continuous navigation before reaching the boundaries.
📅
Best season
Visits are highly popular during the low-water season from June to November as wildlife concentrates around shrinking water sources, while the high-water season from December to May has fascinating forest reflections.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The area consists largely of dense, seasonally flooded rainforests, dark blackwater lakes, and seemingly endless swampy landscapes, frequently rendering traditional walking trails either extremely difficult or entirely impossible.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof dry bags are absolutely necessary to protect all gear, alongside lightweight jungle clothing, highly effective insect repellent, sun protection, binoculars, and high-quality rubber boots for persistent mud.
🅿️
Parking
There are absolutely no roads or parking facilities within this deep section of the rainforest; all travel relies entirely on guided boat operations, requiring vehicles to remain securely stored far away in urban depots.
⚠️
Safety
Mosquitoes and other biting insects present a constant nuisance and health risk, making malaria prophylaxis strongly recommended; furthermore, one should never wander into the dense jungle without an experienced nature guide.
⏱️
Time needed
In order to adequately experience the immense variety of wildlife, including the famous pink river dolphins and countless bird species, most travelers plan at least a four-day, and frequently much longer, excursion into the reserve.
