Matsés National Reserve (Peru)

Weather…

The Matsés National Reserve is a vast and remote wilderness area in the Amazonian Loreto region, protecting one of the most pristine rainforests in the world. It is the ancestral home of the Matsés people, also known as the 'Jaguar People', who have lived here for generations in harmony with the forest. The reserve protects the vital headwaters of the Galvez and Yaquerana rivers and is a critical sanctuary for biodiversity, including many species that are threatened elsewhere in the Amazon. Its landscape is a carpet of endless emerald green, teeming with giant otters, rare primates, and an incredible array of medicinal plants. Accessible only by long river expeditions, Matsés represents the absolute frontier of Amazonian conservation and a powerful example of indigenous-led territory management.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from May to October is best for visiting the Matsés National Reserve as trails are less flooded. During this time, chances of spotting rare primates are highest.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is the most active time for primates as they climb trees in search of food. Dusk also has good observation opportunities when animals return to their sleeping sites.
📜
Etiquette
It is strictly forbidden to feed or touch the animals as this disrupts their natural behavior. Always stay with your guide and do not leave the marked trails.
🎒
What to bring
A strong pair of binoculars is indispensable for spotting primates high in the canopy. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots, insect repellent, and rain gear are also essential.
🧭
Getting there
The Matsés National Reserve is remote and accessible only by boat via the Río Purús. Travel is typically by motorized canoe from the town of Requena, and a multi-day tour is recommended.
🦌
What to expect
Monkeys move quickly through the trees and are often hard to follow. Take your time and quietly watch an area where you hear calls - the animals may then appear.
