Cerro León (Paraguay)

Weather…

Cerro León is an impressive circular geological formation located in the Paraguayan Chaco, within the Defensores del Chaco National Park. Spanning approximately 40 kilometers in diameter, this mountain massif stands as one of the most prominent elevations in the otherwise flat dry savanna landscape. The formation consists primarily of sandstone and reaches a maximum height of around 600 meters above sea level. Ecologically, Cerro León provides a unique habitat for specialized flora and fauna, including various cactus species and endangered mammals like the Chacoan peccary. Geographically, it is situated in the Alto Paraguay Department, near the Bolivian border, in one of the country's most remote areas. Historically, the region was the site of significant military maneuvers during the Chaco War (1932-1935). Today, the mountain remains a symbol of the Chaco wilderness and a key destination for geological research and demanding scientific expeditions.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This significant hill is located deep within a remote, flat region and is mostly accessible only via long, dusty dirt tracks. The approach almost always requires an off-road capable vehicle, as the unpaved paths have deep ruts and washboarding in places.
📅
Best season
Due to the extreme heat experienced in summer, visits during the cooler winter months are far more tolerable and generally safer. When it does rain heavily in this arid zone, the dusty tracks can very rapidly transform into impassable, sticky mud.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The hill stands out strikingly from the otherwise flat, often thorny shrub savanna of the surrounding immediate landscape. The ascents are mostly stony and lined with resilient, scratchy vegetation, making walking anywhere off the beaten path quite arduous.
🎒
What to bring
In addition to sturdy, closed footwear, long, thorn-resistant trousers are absolutely recommended to actively prevent deep scratches. A very large supply of drinking water is mandatory, as there are practically no reliable water sources in the wider vicinity.
🅿️
Parking
Parking lots in the classical sense are completely absent; vehicles are left at the end of the tracks or near a local ranger post. You simply park wherever the terrain safely permits and where the car does not unnecessarily block the passage for others.
⚠️
Safety
Given the indigenous significance of the site, it is absolutely imperative to behave respectfully and strictly observe any local access rules. Furthermore, one must always keep a watchful eye out for snakes and scorpions that like to hide under loose rocks.
⏱️
Time needed
Since the journey there alone takes up a great deal of time, this excursion is often planned as a demanding, full-day project. However, the hike on and around the actual hill itself can usually be completed quite comfortably in about two to four hours.
