Soná
Soná is a welcoming town in Veraguas Province, deeply rooted in Panama's colonial and agricultural history. As the region's main hub, it often serves as a starting point for adventures in Coiba National Park or the surfer's paradise of Santa Catalina. The town itself exudes a quiet, rural atmosphere with colorful facades and a lively central plaza. The surroundings of Soná are characterized by vast plains used for cattle ranching and rice cultivation, as well as numerous rivers such as the Río San Pablo. These waterways offer opportunities for kayaking and birdwatching in a largely untouched natural setting. The region is known for its authentic 'campesino' culture, where traditions are still held high. The drive from Santiago de Veraguas takes about an hour on well-maintained roads. Gastronomically, one should try local specialties like 'sancocho' (chicken soup) or fresh regional cheeses. The best time to visit is during the dry season (January to May) to enjoy outdoor activities without rain showers. Soná provides a deep insight into rural Panama before heading to the Pacific waves.
