San Atanasio Church
The San Atanasio Church in Villa de Los Santos is one of Panama's most significant religious and historical structures. Built in the 18th century, it stands as an outstanding example of Spanish colonial architecture in the Azuero region. The church is inextricably linked to the country's independence movement, as it was the site of the 'Grito de La Villa' on November 10, 1821, the first official call for freedom from the Spanish crown. Inside the church are valuable works of religious art, including intricately carved wooden altars and historical statues of saints. The facade is simple and dignified, while the bell tower overlooks Plaza Simón Bolívar. Every year, the church is the center of Corpus Christi celebrations, which are world-renowned for their ritual dances and colorful masks. As a national historical monument, San Atanasio preserves the spiritual and patriotic heritage of Los Santos province, drawing both pilgrims and history enthusiasts.
