It is home to Bocas Town, the provincial capital and the region's tourist hub, famous for its colorful Caribbean-style wooden houses. The island provides a blend of lively culture and pristine nature, including renowned beaches like Playa Starfish, where numerous red starfish can be seen in the shallow waters. In the early 20th century, Isla Colón was a major center for the United Fruit Company's banana trade, which shaped the local architecture and the multi-ethnic composition of the population. The months of February through April, as well as September and October, generally provide the most sunshine and calmest seas. However, brief tropical rain showers are standard year-round in this lush environment.

While the town center has paved roads and concrete sidewalks, the outer edges quickly transition into unpaved, sandy, or muddy jungle tracks. Bicycles are widely used to navigate the relatively flat coastal roads.

Lightweight casual clothing and reliable sandals are suitable for the main town, but closed-toe shoes are recommended if venturing deeper inland. A light rain jacket is a smart addition due to the unpredictable tropical showers.
