Cerro Fábrega is the second highest mountain peak in Panama, located in the Cordillera de Talamanca mountains, near the border with Costa Rica. The peak is in La Amistad International Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest protected area in Central America. Climbing the mountain is extremely difficult and requires a multi-day expedition, as there are no marked trails and the area is covered by dense, untouched cloud forest. The region's climate is cool and humid. The forests around Cerro Fábrega are of outstanding biological importance, hosting numerous endemic and endangered species. Due to its difficult accessibility, the area has preserved its original, undisturbed state and is an important research site for biologists.

Getting there
Access is extremely remote and typically requires launching an expedition from towns near La Amistad National Park. Reaching the base involves multi-day hiking through dense and challenging wilderness.
Best season
The dry season, mainly from late December to April, is strictly recommended for such an arduous trek. Wet season rains make the remote trails dangerous, muddy, and sometimes completely impassable.
Terrain & paths
The terrain is rugged, steep, and characterized by dense primary rainforest giving way to high-altitude paramo vegetation. Pathfinding can be very difficult due to the lack of maintained trails.
What to bring
Professional expedition gear is mandatory, including heavy-duty boots, a sturdy machete, GPS devices, satellite communication, and complete self-sufficient camping equipment for multiple days in the wild.
Parking
Vehicles are generally left in the starting towns or park ranger stations far from the mountain itself. Secure parking must be arranged with local operators or accommodations before setting out on foot.
Safety
This is an extreme environment with no immediate rescue options. Hazards include venomous wildlife, harsh weather shifts, and getting lost. Hiring experienced indigenous guides is absolutely essential.
