Khan Yunis Castle (Palestinian Territories)

Weather…

The Barquq Castle, situated in the heart of Khan Yunis, is a premier example of Mamluk military and civil architecture. Completed in 1387 during the reign of Sultan Az-Zahir Barquq, it was built as a fortified caravanserai to serve the critical trade and pilgrimage route between Cairo and Damascus. The layout was designed to provide secure lodging for merchants and their livestock while functioning as a garrison to protect the coastal plain from incursions. Today, the most prominent surviving features are the monumental western facade and the imposing limestone gateway. The complex also incorporates a mosque, whose minaret remains a defining feature of the city's skyline. For centuries, this site acted as both an administrative hub and a vital rest stop, reflecting the strategic importance of Khan Yunis in the medieval Islamic world's transportation network.
