💡 Tips
- The urban area is densely populated and bustling. Walk carefully navigating the narrow, busy streets.
- Take shared transit (servees) from central Ramallah; they run constantly and are very affordable.
- Pay attention to the lively street murals that narrate the complex history and identity of the community.
- Street food here is deeply authentic and cheap; eat at stalls where you see a line of locals.
- Be highly respectful with your camera. Always ask permission before photographing people or homes.
🍽 Food
Stands along the main thoroughfare fry these non-stop. The great hot, cheap street snack.
Hearty spit-roasted meat. Look for the busy, small hole-in-the-wall joints in the center.
Stuffed sweet pancakes found at local bakeries, especially prominent during the month of Ramadan.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The bustling center features daily stalls selling fresh fruits and vegetables at very low prices.
Small roasteries along the main street sell excellent, freshly roasted nuts and spirited spices.
Step just outside the dense residential limits and walk up the nearby hills to escape the urban noise.
The neighboring village of Jifna is a short walk away, offering a striking, peaceful rural contrast.

Jalazone was established in 1949 as a refugee camp for Palestinians displaced from central Palestine, strategically located on the main road between Nablus and Jerusalem, just north of Ramallah. Originally consisting of temporary tents, the settlement has evolved over decades into a densely populated urban environment with permanent multi-story concrete structures. Covering an area of only 0.25 square kilometers, it houses thousands of residents, resulting in intense population density. Despite the spatial constraints, Jalazone maintains essential social infrastructure, including UNRWA-run schools and health centers that serve as central hubs for the community. The camp is known for its strong social fabric and the resilience of its inhabitants in the face of challenging economic circumstances. It is situated adjacent to the historical site of Bet El and the village of Jifna, placing it within a sensitive and historically significant landscape. Today, Jalazone functions as an integral, albeit informal, component of the Ramallah metropolitan area.
