Jhelum River (Pakistan)

Weather…

The Jhelum River is a major waterway in South Asia and one of the five rivers that give the Punjab region its name. It originates from the Verinag Spring in the Kashmir Valley and flows for a total length of approximately 725 kilometers before merging with the Chenab River. Historically, the river is famous for the Battle of the Hydaspes in 326 BC, where Alexander the Great defeated the Indian King Porus. The Jhelum plays a crucial role in Pakistan's agriculture and power generation, most notably through the Mangla Dam, one of the world's largest earth-fill dams and hydroelectric projects. The river traverses diverse landscapes, from high-altitude Himalayan valleys to the fertile plains of the Punjab. In its upper reaches, it passes through the Wular Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia. Under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, the rights to its waters are primarily allocated to Pakistan, making it a lifeline for the country's irrigation network.
