Ålesund is a port city on the west coast of Norway, world-renowned for its extraordinary concentration of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture. This unique urban landscape is the result of a devastating fire on the night of January 23, 1904, which destroyed almost the entire wooden city center and left around 10,000 people homeless. Thanks to international aid, including significant support from German Emperor Wilhelm II, the city was rebuilt in just three years using stone and brick, following designs by young Norwegian architects. The city is spread across several islands, including Nørvøy and Aspøy, at the entrance to the Storfjord. Today, Ålesund is Norway's most important fishing port and a major center for the processing and export of dried cod. From Mount Aksla, reached via 418 steps, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the city, the surrounding islands, and the Sunnmøre Alps. Cultural highlights include the Jugendstilsenteret museum and the Atlantic Sea Park, one of Northern Europe's largest saltwater aquariums.
