💡 Tips
- Take advantage of the free city ferries (Byferga) running across the Glomma river to hop between the modern center and the Old Town.
- Wear flat, sensible shoes for exploring Gamlebyen (Old Town), as the historical cobblestones are characterful but uneven.
- Taking the train from Oslo is typically faster and features a more comfortable ride than the bus.
- The Old Town is particularly magical in the late afternoon light when the crowds have thinned out.

Fredrikstad is a city in Østfold County in southeastern Norway, located at the mouth of the Glomma River where it meets the Oslofjord. It was founded in 1567 by King Frederick II after the nearby town of Sarpsborg was burned down during the Northern Seven Years' War. Fredrikstad is famous for Gamlebyen (The Old Town), Northern Europe's best-preserved fortified town. This old quarter was fortified in the 17th century based on Dutch models, featuring moats, ramparts, and massive bastions to protect the region against Swedish invasions. Today, Gamlebyen is an animated district filled with museums, artisan workshops, and cafes. The modern side of the city developed on the western bank of the Glomma and became a hub for timber, brick production, and shipbuilding during the 19th century. Fredrikstad is now a modern industrial city and a significant trade center, distinguished by its architecture and proximity to the Hvaler archipelago. The city is also known for its annual festivals and historical maritime heritage.
