Biu Plateau

The Biu Plateau is located in northeastern Nigeria, within Borno State, and represents a distinct volcanic highland region. Rising to an average elevation of 700 to 800 meters, it stands out prominently above the surrounding plains of the Chad Basin. Geologically, the plateau is of great interest as it is composed almost entirely of basaltic lava flows that erupted during the Tertiary and Quaternary periods from numerous now-extinct volcanoes. The landscape is marked by well-preserved volcanic cones, crater lakes, and extensive basalt fields, making it unique in Nigerian geography. The weathered volcanic rocks have produced highly fertile soils, which support intensive agriculture in an otherwise semi-arid region. Due to its altitude, the plateau enjoys a slightly cooler climate than the surrounding lowlands, making it a key area for human settlement. It also serves as a major watershed between the Benue River system and the Lake Chad Basin.
