Las Peñitas

Las Peñitas is the epitome of Nicaraguan coastal coziness. Just 20 minutes from the city of León, this seaside village gives a well-suited blend of adventure and relaxation. The long, golden sandy beach is popular with surfers of all levels, as the waves here are consistent and less crowded than in the south of the country. Along the beachfront, there are numerous small hostels and restaurants serving fresh-caught fish and seafood. A major highlight is the adjacent Isla Juan Venado Nature Reserve. Here, visitors can take a boat tour through the mangroves to spot crocodiles, iguanas, and countless seabirds. In the right season, it's also possible to see sea turtles nesting. The sunsets in Las Peñitas are considered some of the most beautiful in Nicaragua, as the sky turns dramatic shades of purple and gold. The atmosphere is unpretentious and authentic, far from mass tourism. Access is very easy via local bus or taxi from León. The best time to visit is year-round, with the largest waves occurring during the rainy season (May to October).
