Granada is situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua (Cocibolca) and is celebrated as the oldest colonial city in Central America to remain in its original location. Founded in 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, it rapidly developed into a vital commercial hub for the Spanish Crown. The city is renowned for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, featuring brightly colored facades and ornate interior courtyards. A significant historical event was the 1856 siege and intentional burning of the city by American adventurer William Walker, which destroyed much of its historic fabric. Key landmarks include the iconic Granada Cathedral and the San Francisco Convent, which is one of the oldest ecclesiastical buildings in the region. Nearby attractions include Las Isletas, an archipelago of 365 small islands, and the imposing Mombacho Volcano. Today, Granada is a flourishing center for tourism and traditional crafts, maintaining its proud identity as a colonial gem.
