Upi Bay is one of the most iconic natural wonders of New Caledonia, located on the northeastern side of the Isle of Pines. Often compared to Vietnam's Ha Long Bay, it is characterized by massive, mushroom-shaped coral rock formations that rise dramatically from the shallow, turquoise lagoon. These ancient coral structures have been sculpted over millennia by wind and water erosion, creating a surreal marine landscape. To preserve the fragile ecosystem, many visitors explore the bay using traditional Melanesian outrigger canoes, known as pirogues, which glide silently across the crystal-clear waters. The reserve is a vital sanctuary for marine life, providing a safe haven for nurse sharks, various stingray species, and green sea turtles. Fringed by dense stands of columnar pines and pristine white sands, Upi Bay represents an excellent harmony between geological history and animated biological diversity.
