Best season
The months from May to October are best for observing green turtles in the seagrass meadows of Îlot Maître Reserve. During the austral summer stronger winds and rain can reduce underwater visibility.
Best time of day
Early morning turtles are often most active while grazing in the shallow seagrass beds. Late afternoon also provides good light and less boat traffic.
Etiquette
Never approach turtles closer than 5 metres and do not touch them. Feeding or startling the animals is strictly prohibited to avoid disturbing their natural behaviour.
What to bring
Snorkel gear is essential for watching turtles in their habitat. Light clothing and a UV-protective rash vest can prevent sunburn and jellyfish stings.
Getting there
The reserve is reachable by boat in about 15 minutes from Nouméa's harbour. Regular water taxis run to the island, and guided snorkelling tours are available on site.
What to expect
Although the turtle population here is dense, you still need patience to watch them grazing. Swim slowly and quietly to avoid scaring the animals away.
