Hlawga National Park (Myanmar (Burma))

Weather…

Hlawga National Park is situated about 35 kilometers north of Yangon and serves as a significant recreational area and a center for environmental education in Myanmar. Established in 1982, the park covers an area of approximately 618 hectares and consists of a wildlife park, a safari area, and a large lake. It was originally designed as an educational center for nature conservation and a sanctuary for various indigenous animal species. Visitors can observe free-roaming animals in the safari park, such as spotted deer, hog deer, and rhesus monkeys. Hlawga Lake at the center of the park acts as an important water reservoir for Yangon city and attracts numerous waterbirds, including migratory species during the winter months. In addition to wildlife viewing, the park features well-maintained hiking trails, picnic spots, and canoeing opportunities. An integrated rehabilitation center cares for injured animals and prepares them for re-release into the wild. Its proximity to the former capital makes it a popular destination for school groups and weekend visitors.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The park is conveniently accessible via a short road trip from downtown Yangon, taking roughly an hour by taxi or private car, making it a popular daytime escape from the bustling city.
📅
Best season
The dry season from November to February provides the most comfortable and cooler temperatures for outdoor activities, avoiding the intense monsoon rains that can muddy the internal paths from June to October.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is predominantly flat and gentle, featuring a combination of lightly forested areas, open grassy zones, and serene lake shores that are easily navigable for visitors of all fitness levels.
🎒
What to bring
Casual, light clothing and comfortable walking shoes are perfectly sufficient, though bringing adequate sun protection, mosquito repellent, and perhaps binoculars for bird watching is highly encouraged.
🅿️
Parking
Well-maintained parking lots are available right near the main entrance gates, accommodating both private vehicles and larger tour buses with generally ample space during typical weekdays.
⚠️
Safety
The environment is highly managed and secure, but visitors should avoid feeding the free-roaming monkeys, as they can become aggressive or attempt to snatch unmonitored personal belongings.
⏱️
Time needed
Most families and tourists spend a relaxed half-day of about three to four hours walking the trails, taking the safari bus ride, and enjoying a quiet picnic by the scenic waterside.
