The Crête de Saint-Michel is a prominent limestone ridge that dominates the northwestern relief of Monaco and forms a natural border with the French hinterland. Geologically, this ridge is part of the subalpine fold mountains and consists predominantly of hard, white limestone from the Jurassic period. The terrain drops steeply from the ridge height towards the Mediterranean Sea, which required the construction of terraced buildings and complex retaining walls. Historically, the ridge served as a natural barrier and vantage point, while today it is intensely used for luxury residential complexes. The vegetation on the slopes is typically Mediterranean, with many gardens resting on artificially created plateaus. The ridge provides an extensive view over Monte Carlo to the Italian coastal section in clear weather.
