Sainte-Dévote Valley (Monaco)

Weather…

The Vallon de Sainte-Dévote is a deep natural gorge that separates the Monte Carlo plateau from the Condamine plain. Geomorphologically, it is the bed of the former Gaumates torrent, which eroded the limestone over millennia. Today, the stream is largely channeled and runs underground, but the dramatic topography of the gorge remains evident. A striking feature of the relief is the monumental Sainte-Dévote Bridge, which spans the valley and forms a vital traffic artery. At the entrance of the valley lies the Sainte-Dévote Church, dedicated to the patron saint of the Principality. The relief of the gorge walls is so steep that buildings on the edges had to be anchored deep into the rock. Every year, this area is the site of one of the most famous turns on the Monaco Formula 1 race track.
