Temple of the Inscriptions (Mexico)

Weather…

The Temple of the Inscriptions is the centerpiece of the ancient Maya city of Palenque and serves as the magnificent funerary monument of King K'inich Janaab' Pakal. Completed in the late 7th century, the pyramid is named for the three large limestone panels inside its upper sanctuary, which contain 617 glyphs detailing the city's dynastic history. The temple achieved worldwide fame in 1952 when archaeologist Alberto Ruz Lhuillier discovered a hidden internal staircase leading to a subterranean burial chamber. Deep within the pyramid's core, he found Pakal's massive sarcophagus, featuring an intricately carved lid that remains one of the most celebrated masterpieces of pre-Columbian art. The pyramid's nine stepped tiers correspond to the nine levels of the Maya underworld, Xibalba, signifying the ruler's spiritual journey from death to divine transformation.
