Le Batelage
The historical building of Le Batelage in Souillac is an impressive testimony to Mauritian industrial history of the 19th century. Constructed from dark, massive basalt rock characteristic of the island's colonial architecture, it originally served as a warehouse and loading station for the sugar produced in the fertile southern regions. Ships would dock directly at the estuary of the Savanne River to collect the precious cargo destined for international markets. Today, the site has been revitalized into a cultural and gastronomic hub for the region. The building houses a well-known restaurant where visitors can enjoy local delicacies within a setting steeped in history. Its waterfront location, surrounded by ancient trees and the rugged coastal landscape of Souillac, makes Le Batelage an essential stop for travelers seeking to explore the authentic south of Mauritius, offering a unique blend of maritime heritage and modern hospitality.
