Balaclava Ruins (Mauritius)

Weather…

The Balaclava Ruins are located near the scenic Baie aux Tortues (Turtle Bay) on the northwest coast of Mauritius, preserving the legacy of the island's French colonial era. The complex was established in the 18th century under the visionary Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais, who sought to transform Mauritius into a strategic naval stronghold in the Indian Ocean. The remains include an old flour mill, a gunpowder arsenal, and sections of robust fortifications designed to repel sea-borne invaders. The site's military history came to a dramatic end in 1874, when a catastrophic gunpowder explosion leveled most of the buildings, leaving behind the haunting basalt structures seen today. Now located within the lush grounds of the Maritim Resort & Spa, the ruins are integrated into a beautifully landscaped park near the mouth of the Citron River. Visitors can explore the weathered stone walls that stand in stark contrast to the surrounding tropical greenery, offering a peaceful glimpse into the island’s turbulent past.
