Aapravasi Ghat (Mauritius)

Weather…

Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis stands as a powerful testament to one of the most significant shifts in global labor history. Following the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, Mauritius became the site of the 'Great Experiment' to replace enslaved labor with indentured workers. Between 1849 and 1923, nearly half a million people from India passed through this depot to work on the island's sugar plantations. The site consists of the remains of structures built from local basalt stone, including symbolic steps that every immigrant had to climb upon arrival from the harbor. These steps represent the transition from their old lives to a new, uncertain future. The complex once housed administrative offices, hospitals, and temporary quarters. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006, it serves as a cornerstone of Mauritian identity, as the majority of the population can trace their ancestry back to those who first set foot on these historic stones.
