Erg Chech (Mali)

Weather…

The Erg Chech is one of the most expansive sand seas in the Sahara, stretching across northern Mali deep into southwestern Algeria. Geographically, this erg is distinguished by its monumental, mostly linear dune formations that can reach heights of up to 300 meters. The landscape is one of the most inhospitable regions on Earth, characterized by a near-total absence of surface water and extreme thermal amplitudes. Historically, the Erg Chech was a feared obstacle for caravans, which could only navigate along its fringes to avoid the impassable dune fields. The geological foundation of the erg is the Taoudeni Basin, whose sandy sediments have been shaped over millions of years by the prevailing Harmattan winds into this massive relief. Vegetation is virtually non-existent here, save for extremely specialized plants in a few moisture-retaining depressions. Today, the Erg Chech remains a place of archaic beauty, visited almost exclusively by research missions or daring expeditions.
