Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque)
Hukuru Miskiy, also known as the Old Friday Mosque, is one of the most significant architectural monuments in the Maldives. Built in 1656 during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I, it is constructed almost entirely of coral stone. The intricate carvings on the exterior walls and the artistic calligraphy inside bear witness to the exceptional craftsmanship of Maldivian builders. Particularly noteworthy are the lacquer work on the ceiling and the finely crafted wooden elements depicting Quranic inscriptions. The mosque stands on the site of a former temple, reflecting the religious transformation of the islands. Due to its universal cultural significance, it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Beside the mosque lies a historical cemetery with elaborately decorated coral stone tombstones of prominent figures from Maldivian history.
