Lake Kenyir (Malaysia)

Weather…

Lake Kenyir, situated in the Malaysian state of Terengganu, stands as the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia, spanning an impressive 260 square kilometers. Created in 1985 by damming the Kenyir River, its primary purpose was the generation of hydroelectric power through the Sultan Mahmud Power Station. The flooding of the valley resulted in the creation of over 340 islands, which were formerly the peaks of hills and mountains in the region. Surrounded by a pristine rainforest estimated to be 130 million years old, the area serves as a vital corridor for wildlife, including Asian elephants, clouded leopards, and several species of hornbills. Today, it has evolved into a major ecotourism hub, famous for its unique 'houseboat' accommodations, waterfalls like Lasir and Soak, and extensive limestone cave systems such as Gua Bewah. The lake also functions as a critical water management system, mitigating the impact of heavy monsoon rains on the coastal plains.
