Cherating Coast

The Cherating Coast is situated in the state of Pahang on the eastern seaboard of Peninsular Malaysia, approximately 45 kilometers north of Kuantan along the South China Sea. Geographically, the area is characterized by expansive sandy beaches and the estuary of the Cherating River, which is lined with dense mangrove forests. Historically, it gained international prominence in 1980 when it became the site of Asia's first Club Med resort, signaling a major shift in the region's tourism development. The coastline serves as a critical nesting habitat for Green Sea Turtles, with the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary playing a vital role in conservation and hatchery programs since its inception. During the Northeast Monsoon from November to March, the coast experiences significant swells, making Cherating the premier surfing destination in Peninsular Malaysia. Beyond tourism, the local economy has traditionally relied on artisanal fishing and the production of handicrafts made from pandan leaves. Today, the region focuses on balancing infrastructure growth with the preservation of its sensitive coastal and marine ecosystems.
