Patuxai (Laos)

Weather…

Patuxai is a monumental victory arch in the center of Vientiane, constructed between 1957 and 1968 to honor those who fought for independence from France. Architecturally, the structure blends the design of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris with traditional Lao motifs, including depictions of Kinnari and lotus patterns. A notable historical detail is that the cement used for its construction was originally donated by the United States for an airport runway, leading to its nickname, the vertical runway. The monument features five towers representing the five principles of peaceful coexistence among nations and the five Buddhist precepts. Its interior ceilings are ornately decorated with depictions of Hindu deities, reflecting the cultural syncretism of the region. Today, it serves as a major landmark and provides a panoramic view of the capital city and the nearby Mekong River. The surrounding park features musical fountains and remains a central gathering point for the people of Vientiane.
