Stepnogorsk is an industrial city in northern Kazakhstan, part of the Akmola Region, with a compelling history as a former 'closed city.' Established in 1959 under the secret codename Tselinograd-25, it served during the Soviet era as a classified center for uranium and gold mining, as well as advanced microbiological research. The settlement attained city status in 1964 but remained omitted from official maps until the collapse of the Soviet Union. Geographically, Stepnogorsk is situated in the rolling steppes of the Kazakh Uplands, roughly 185 kilometers northeast of the capital, Astana. Today, the city stands as a major hub for the chemical and mining industries, with uranium ore processing continuing to play a significant role. The city's architecture is strictly functional and compact, a direct result of its original military-industrial purpose. Despite its secretive origins, Stepnogorsk is increasingly opening up, diversifying its industrial base beyond traditional resource extraction.
