Temirtau, whose name translates to 'Iron Mountain' in Kazakh, is the premier hub of the Kazakh iron and steel industry. Located in the Karaganda Region on the shores of the Samarkand Reservoir, it was officially granted city status in 1945. Its development is inextricably linked to the construction of the massive Karaganda Metallurgical Plant, which began during World War II to meet the Soviet Union's demand for metal. Temirtau also gained political significance as the place where Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first president of Kazakhstan, began his career as a steelworker. Despite its heavy industrial focus, the city hosts cultural institutions such as a theater for children and youth and a local history museum. However, environmental pollution stemming from heavy industry remains one of the primary challenges for the city administration and its residents.
