Usuki Stone Buddhas (Japan)

Weather…

The Usuki Stone Buddhas in Oita Prefecture are a collection of over 60 Buddhist statues carved into soft volcanic rock faces. Dating primarily from the late Heian period (794-1185) to the early Kamakura period, these figures represent some of the most significant religious rock art in Japan. Due to their exceptional craftsmanship and historical age, 59 of the statues were designated as National Treasures of Japan in 1995, a rare distinction for stone carvings in a country where wood was the dominant medium. The statues are divided into four main clusters: Furuzono, Sannomaru, Hoki I, and Hoki II. The Dainichi Nyorai in the Furuzono group is particularly celebrated as one of the most aesthetically refined Buddhist sculptures in the nation. For centuries, the carvings were exposed to the elements, leading to extensive modern conservation efforts and protective roofing structures to prevent further decay. The exact identity of the carvers remains a historical mystery.
