Stretching along the Sea of Japan, it features Shichiri Nagahama Beach (七里長浜), a vast coastal expanse excellent for long walks and viewing spectacular sunsets. Inland, the town serves as a gateway to the Shirakami-Sanchi mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site containing the world’s largest primeval beech forest. Ajigasawa is culinary-famous for its grilled squid, sold at characterful roadside stalls along the coast. The town also gained fame through 'Wasao,' the fluffy Akita dog known for his unique 'ugly-cute' face. Visitors can soak in the relaxed atmosphere of this fishing community and unwind in local onsens that offer views of the crashing waves. The area is easily accessible via the Resort Shirakami train on the Gono Line, famous for its large windows designed for coastal sightseeing.
