Atami
Atami has been one of Japan's premier onsen (hot spring) destinations for decades. Tucked away on the steep slopes of a partially submerged volcanic caldera, the city provides spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The abundance of natural hot springs powers numerous public baths and ryokan, providing ultimate relaxation. A unique highlight is the year-round coastal fireworks display, famed for its incredible acoustics provided by the surrounding hills. Cultural attractions include the MOA Museum of Art, which features a world-class collection and impressive panoramic architecture. The ancient Kinomiya Shrine is home to a 2,000-year-old camphor tree, revered as a sacred "power spot." In early spring, the Atami Baien Plum Garden features some of the earliest blossoms in the country. The city retains a nostalgic Showa-era charm alongside modern trendy cafes. The local culinary scene is famous for fresh seafood, particularly "himono" (sun-dried fish), a staple of the region. Atami is a major stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen line, making it reachable from Tokyo in under 50 minutes. It is a spirited destination throughout the year, especially during the festive fireworks nights in summer and winter.
