Laurentino 38, located in the southern part of Rome, is a massive public housing project designed in the 1970s and built in the early 1980s. It stands as one of the city's most renowned examples of Brutalist and Modernist architecture. Conceived by architect Pietro Barucci, the district is characterized by long, imposing apartment blocks connected by a series of elevated pedestrian bridges. These 'ponti' (bridges) were intended to foster a sense of community by facilitating social interaction above the street-level traffic. Today, the district stands as a bold, if controversial, urban planning experiment. The neighborhood was initially designed with a utopian vision but has faced social and infrastructural challenges over the years. Despite this, it is a spirited community with a strong local identity. For architecture and urban planning enthusiasts, Laurentino provides a fascinating case study in 20th-century housing philosophies. Beyond its architecture, the district is largely residential, with services catering to its inhabitants. Nearby, you'll find the huge Euroma2 shopping complex and the modern EUR business district, which provides a stark contrast to the aesthetic of Laurentino 38. Getting to Laurentino is easy via public transport. It is the southern terminus of Rome's Metro B line (Laurentina), which gives it direct access to the city center, including the Colosseum and Termini station. Numerous bus lines also serve the area. While not a typical tourist destination, the best way to experience Laurentino is by walking its streets and bridges to get a feel for its unique urban landscape and atmosphere. A visit can be made at any time of year, as its attraction lies in its architectural structure.
