Ostia Sud is a neighborhood in the southern part of Lido di Ostia, the coastal district of Rome. It is primarily known for its long sandy beaches and the modern tourist port (Porto Turistico di Roma). In summer, Ostia Sud becomes a bustling seaside resort frequented by both Romans and tourists looking for a quick escape from the city's hustle. The port provides berths for hundreds of yachts and is a center for sailing and other water sports. Along the coast, there are numerous 'stabilimenti balneari' (beach clubs) offering sunbeds, umbrellas, and restaurants. The greatest nearby attraction is the archaeological park of Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome. Although not directly in Ostia Sud, it's a short bus or train ride away and an absolute must-see. This vast archaeological site provides a fascinating glimpse into daily life in ancient Rome, with well-preserved theaters, baths, temples, and apartment buildings. Ostia Sud itself is more modern, with residential areas, shops, and a lively promenade great for an evening stroll (passeggiata). Getting to Ostia Sud from the center of Rome is very easy. The Roma-Lido train line directly connects Porta San Paolo station (next to the Piramide metro stop) to the Lido Centro, Stella Polare, and Castel Fusano stations, all of which serve Ostia. The journey takes about 30 minutes. Fiumicino Airport is also very close. The best time to visit is from May to September when the weather is well-suited for swimming and sunbathing. July and August can be very crowded, so late spring and early autumn are good alternatives for those wishing to avoid the crowds.
