Neptune's Grotto (Italy)

Weather…

Neptune's Grotto (Grotta di Nettuno) is one of Italy's most spectacular marine stalactite caves, situated at the base of the sheer cliffs of Capo Caccia near Alghero, Sardinia. Discovered in the 18th century by local fishermen, the cave system extends for about four kilometers, although only a fraction is accessible to the general public. The interior features awe-inspiring formations of stalactites and stalagmites, along with Lago Lamarmora, one of the largest underground saltwater lakes in Europe. Visitors can access the grotto either by sea via boat excursions or by descending the 'Escala del Cabirol' (Goat's Steps), a staircase of 654 steps carved into the cliff face in 1954. Geologically, the cave is part of an extensive karst system formed millions of years ago through continuous water erosion. Neptune's Grotto is located within the Capo Caccia - Isola Piana Marine Protected Area, serving as a vital natural site for both tourism and geological research in the Mediterranean.
